Pope Francis’ third anniversary celebrations set for Gweru
CATHOLICS from across the country will tomorrow converge at St Theresa Cathedral in Gweru to commemorate the third anniversary of the election of Pope Francis, it has been established.

Pope Francis was elected as the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13, 2013, taking over from the retired Pope Benedict XVI.

Catholic Church officials confirmed the function and said Pope Francis’s representative in Zimbabwe, Archbishop Marek Zalewski, will be the guest of honour.

Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops Conference director of social communications, Alfonce Kugwa said the commemorations would be held tomorrow.

“The Pope’s representative to Zimbabwe, Archbishop Marek Zalewski, will be coming to Gweru St Theresa Cathedral to commemorate Pope Francis’ anniversary,” he said.

Zalewski was appointed as the new nuncio for Zimbabwe in April 2014.

According to the Catholic Church, “the nuncio works as the papal representative in the country and is responsible for communication between the country’s episcopal conference and Rome, especially on issues like the selection of a new bishop, as well as the administrative support the country may require from Rome”.

Born in Poland, Zalewski was ordained a priest in 1989. He worked as nuncio in the Central African Republic (1995-98); Diplomatic Mission to the United Nations Organisation — New York (1998-2001); United Kingdom (2001-2004); Germany (2004-2008); Thailand (2008-2011); Singapore (2011-2012); Malaysia (2012-2014) and now Zimbabwe.
