Gweru water supplies set to improve

The Gwenoro Dam water treatment plant has received a facelift after Gweru City Council made major renovations at the plant, a senior council official has said.

City assistant engineering director Praymore Mhlanga said in the past two months, council renovated 10 filters and replaced some pumps.

Mhlanga told NewsDay at the sidelines of a tour by council’s environmental committee at Gwenoro Water Plant this week that the renovations will see a boost to water delivery in the city.

“We renovated ten filters as well as replacing dosing pumps,” he said. “The dosing pumps are used to inject water treatment chemicals to the raw water. This is quite a major development in water delivery to the city.”

The committee was also touring two state-of-the-art pumps purchased at a cost of $1,5 million from China, which were delivered two weeks ago. Mhlanga said once installed, the two dresser pumps will see Gweru tackling the perennial problem of pumping water to high-lying areas in the city.

“At the moment we have one pump functioning as the other developed some fault,” he said.

“But with the arrival of these two pumps, water delivery problems, particularly in some parts of the city in high-lying areas, will be a thing of the past.”
