Gweru property developer scoops prestigious award
A GWERU property developer has scooped the Midlands Provincial Businesswoman of the Year award.
Mrs Smelly Dube of River Valley Properties won the accolade at the Zimbabwe National Chamber of
Commerce provincial awards presentation dinner that was held in Gweru last Friday.
This year’s presentation dinner was held under the theme “The Roadmap to Zimbabwe’s Desired Future”.
In an interview, Mrs Dube said she was excited to win the award.
“I am really thankful to President Mugabe who gave women the opportunity to climb up the ladder in the post-independence era. I thought I was lessening the burden on desperate home seekers and little did I know there were people watching what I was doing.
“I felt proud to be a woman and I thought when I was doing it, I did it to demystify that we cannot be at par with men. I appreciate the empowerment programmes,” she said.
Guest of honour, Steelmakers group general manager Mr Alexander Johnson, hailed the initiative and said it motivates entrepreneurs.
He urged Government to speedily resuscitate operations at New Zim Steel (formerly Ziscosteel).
“If the country is to regain its position as a steel manufacturing giant in Southern Africa, New Zim Steel has to be functional.
Mr Johnson called on the corporate sector to view its problems and challenges as opportunities for potential growth.
Other companies and individuals honoured included the Businessman of the Year award won by Midlands Metals’ Mr Tatenda Karimazondo, JR Goddard which won the Constructor of the Year award while Kwekwe City Council was honoured with the Best Local Authority award.
Masvingo State University’s newly appointed Vice Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo, was the recipient of the Best Transformation Leader accolade.
