Mining, medical school for MSU on the cards
GWERU — Preparations for the establishment of a college of medicine and a School of Mining Engineering at Midlands State University (MSU) are at an advanced stage.

Making a presentation at the Midlands Business Opportunities Conference last week, MSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebe said the establishment of the schools of medicine and engineering would create business opportunities for local players in the province.

He said the development would not only transform the socio-economic status of the province, but also improve the livelihoods and health delivery system for Midlands Province.

“In the realm of using education as the ultimate tool of our socio-economic transformation, deliberations are at an advanced stage to start a college of medicine as well as a School of Mining Engineering at MSU,” Professor Bhebe said.

“The mere existence of a teaching hospital in the Midlands Province will undoubtedly have positive effect on the business arena as medical supplies will be needed and employment will be created.”

He said through the mining engineering school there would also be an opportunity to explore the Great Dyke.

“On the mining side, the university is planning to expand its tentacles to Zvishavane town, thus further envelope a greater part of the province in terms of the geographical coverage and meaningful exploitation of the mineral-rich Great Dyke,” added Bhebe.
