Masiyiwa ranked in top 50
CNN - Newsday Online

Masiyiwa named under world’s 50 greatest leaders

Econet Wireless founder and chairman Strive Masiyiwa has been ranked among the top 50 greatest world leaders by CNN’s Fortune magazine.

In a list released last week, Masiyiwa is on number 35 out of 50’s world greatest leaders. The Roman Catholic leader Pope Francis is leading the pack of the world’s greatest leaders which includes businessmen, actors and presidents, civic activists and sports persons.

In a citation CNN Fortune lauded Masiyiwa as a development opportunities advocate.
“Masiyiwa, who also sits on the Africa Progress Panel as well as the boards of Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa and the Rockefeller Foundation, is a persuasive advocate for development opportunities and the creation of strong government institutions,” Fortune said.

Said Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin: “He is truly one of Africa’s most influential figures, with his good counsel sought by world leaders and CEOs,” adding that Masiyiwa is “a champion for the power of technology to improve the lives of millions”.

Fortune magazine said it limited its list to currently active leaders and it asked leadership experts and Fortune reporters to suggest candidates and then vetted the ideas with people in each industry.

The list includes Angelina Jolie, Angela Merkel, Christine Largade, Warren Buffett, Bill Clinton, Geoffrey Canada and Michael Bloomberg.

A prominent African is Juliana Rotich, a 36-year-old lady, who is the cofounder and executive director of Ushahidi.
