Local is lekker campaign
Fashion Weekend Zimbabwe has launched an online campaign that is aimed at encouraging locals to wear local designs. Dubbed the “Be Yourself Proudly Zimbabwean Made” competition after 2014 FWZ theme, locals are being invited to send pictures of themselves in local designs to the FWZ facebook page.
It was launched on April 2 and will run until May 4.
The initiative is one of the multiple efforts to incorporate local brands into local stores, encourage designers to be competitive while getting monetary rewards for their work.
“The aim of this competition is to get Zimbabweans excited about being Zimbabwean and wearing locally made clothes. We have such amazing creative designers in this country that desperately need the support and business of the local consumer,” said Shamiso Ruzvidzo, founder and director of FWZ
The best 10 entries from different parts of the country will be selected and become the faces of this year’s FWZ. This will help to make the show more appealing and relevant to locals.
“We are looking for people above the age of 15 who have an X-factor that shouts out on camera. This could be a great personality, a smile, pretty much anything different and exciting. We will have photo shoots before making them the faces of this year’s campaign,” she said.
Besides replacing the current faces, the winners will also be awarded with US$200 to spend on local products that will be showcasing at this year’s FWZ.
Launched last year, the event has had success stories in the form of Samantha Matemadombo, a young designer who is now working with Truworths Zimbabwe.
As a result of the partnership between FWZ and Truworths Matemadombo is working with the department store to create a ready to wear collection after outshining other designers last year.
This year’s edition of the fashion extravaganza will take place on October 25 and 26 at the Barclays Sports Club in Mount Pleasant.
This year will present a full line up of fashion, music and food while networking local designers and craftsmen.
Fashion Weekend Zimbabwe is working to aid designer development and providing local talent with an invaluable opportunity to kick-start their careers.
