Former Redcliff official eyes Gweru town clerk post

FORMER Redcliff municipality town clerk, Elizabeth Gwatipedza was reportedly chosen as Gweru town clerk soon after she emerged the top candidate for the post in interviews recently held in the Midlands capital, NewsDay has established.

The post was advertised five months ago following the dismissal of former town clerk, Daniel Matawu over allegations of incompetence.

Matawu was fired in July allegedly after being found guilty of gross incompetence and negligence to duties.

Commission chairperson, Tsunga Mhangami yesterday confirmed that the interviews were complete, but refused to divulge the name of the successful candidate, saying names had been forwarded to the Local Government Board.

“We have just completed the first line of interviews and it is the board that has the mandate to announce the successful candidate,” he said.

But close sources at council said Gwatipedza emerged the top candidate ahead of acting town clerk and finance director, Edgar Mwedzi as well as two other candidates.

Mwedzi has been acting town clerk since July, when Matawu was fired from council.

The development comes after recent recruitment of substantive directors in the departments of health, engineering, housing and community services in line with Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s directive to do so.

Council is yet to fill the position of chamber secretary.
