Festive season blood drive starts
Following the launch of the 2013 festive season campaign last week, the National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) unveiled Ms Pauline Matambanadzo (blood recipient) as NBSZ brand ambassador for the Harare
region and Mr Bob Nyabinde, popularly known as the “Headmaster” was elevated to national brand ambassador having served as Midlands brand ambassador.
In this initiative, NBSZ joined hands with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), and other corporate organisations to conscientise all road users about driving safely during the festive season.
Present at the launch was the Guest of Honour, TSCZ Board Chairman, Mr Nelson Mawema, TSCZ Board Members, Pledge 25 Club Patron, Ms Farai Mpofu, brand ambassadors, TSCZ Pastor Charles Charamba and his wife Olivia, NBSZ ambassadors, Mr Emmanuel Nyamande, Gospel icon Mrs Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave and former Miss Zimbabwe, Ms Langa Sibanda.
Ms Pamela Gwatidzo and various stakeholders such as the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Road Safe, Mars, Doves, Toyota Zimbabwe, AMTEC, CMED, Driving Schools’ Association of Zimbabwe, commuter omnibus associations and church organisations were part of this great campaign.
In his remarks, NBSZ CEO, Mr David Mvere, recognised the role of TSCZ in Zimbabwe as well as the NBSZ and how important the partnership is.
“We recognise the role of TSCZ in the awareness to the public on road safety through media workshops, public meetings and NBSZ in promoting blood donation among Zimbabweans in order to recruit and retain regular blood donors” he said.
“Through the partnership, the public will better understand the need for blood transfusion for some accident victims and make an effort to come and donate blood” he said.
The Guest of Honour at the launch, TSCZ Board Chairman Mr Nelson Mawema, echoed the same message.
“As TSCZ, we leave no stone unturned in our endeavour to tame the traffic jungle in Zimbabwe, reduce deaths and injuries due to road traffic accidents” he said.
The launch of the festive season campaign was followed by a two day Youth Donors Day that ended yesterday.
The blood drives were hosted through the Pledge 25 Club Zimbabwe.
Youths from different backgrounds, religions and ages came and donated blood on their own freewill.
The blood drives were being held under the theme “Make a difference, Give blood”.
NBSZ is targeting to collect 5 970 units of blood through the festive season campaign. However, should demand increase or decrease, the target will be adjusted accordingly.
As the festive season progresses, blood drives are continuing across the country until January 2014 through the NBSZ branch offices in Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo and Mutare.
Blood is precious and unfortunately there is not enough of it.
As opportunities for successful treatment of cancers, injuries, surgical problems and blood disorders increase, the demand for blood also increases.
