Chapungu Eyes Return

PREMIER Soccer League (PSL) returnées Chapungu will be beefing up their squad as they start preparations for the 2014 PSL season after a five-year absence from the top -flight league.

Chapungu were promoted from the Zifa Central Region Division One League.

Club vice-chairperson Alfred Moyo yesterday told Southern Eye Sport of their plans as they make a return to top-flight football.

“We are targeting experienced players as we beef up our squad in preparation for next season. We are also targeting unknown players who have talent, but have been deprived of playing PSL football before,” he said.

The return of Chapungu would be a welcome move for the Midlands football fans as Gweru did not have a top-flight league team following the relegation of Hardbody last year.

“Our plan is to consolidate our stay in the PSL. That is the reason we are looking for experienced players. We will start our season preparation in January soon after New Year’s Eve because we need to prepare very early. We need to work very hard,” he said.

The Airforce side previously had players like 2002 soccer star of the year Maxwell “MaRhino” Dube, Philip Marufu, now at army side Black Rhinos and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cuthbert Malajila.

Chapungu were promoted into the topflight league following a convincing 4-2 victory over Tongogara with three games to go before the season ended.

The Gweru side became the first team to be promoted from Division One regional leagues this year. They were joined by Plumtree Chiefs (Zifa Southern Region Division One League), ZPC Kariba (Northern Region) and a yet to be determined team from the Eastern Region after champions Hippo Vally were disbanded.
